Music tells a story. A good story keeps you guessing, and draws you into the plot.
I've come to really appreciate the progressive style of rock and metal. Just about every top pop song since the 50's is just a variance of 4 cords that are catchy, lighthearted, and oddly familiar. That's why they're popular. Back in the baroque and classical era of music, a composer was great if he came up with something that kept people on the edge of their seats, weaving an intriguing tapestry of notes. It had to keep changing, because their pieces were often 30 minutes to hours long! While modern pop songs are fun and relateable, they often lack depth. They're easy to write, and easy to listen to.
Perhaps it's just because I don't know much about music theory, but I like putting together stanzas that are different from the one's before them, hopefully to draw out a point.
Things song: acoustic slow to start with, major cords going into minor cords
Beautiful Mind
Little girl
Old soul
Oh what those big eyes have
Seen to make her grow
Big world
So cold
But she's got such a heart she doesn't
Seem to mind the snow
Come inside, come inside
Shake the worries from your mind
But it's okay, she's inspired
By white sparkles on the hillside
Don't say to stay
Nor to go
She's in the wind
And she has goals
Don't be afraid
She'll be fine
You'll see the
Sparkle in her eyes
One of a kind, she has
Her hidden heart
And beautiful mind
